Planting Proposal

The Brief
To create a planting scheme that uses a colour palette of predominantly whites, blues, greens and purples, that provides colour and interest throughout the flowering season from April / May to September / October.
The aquatic plants should be mostly native species and should be planted in the foreground (house side) in such a way so as not to obscure the view from the house of the entire expanse of the swimming pond. So, low height plants in the foreground, gradually increasing in height as they circle the pond, with the tallest plants (the reeds) on the dam side.
The planting, as far as possible, should be sufficient for cleaning the pool from year one.

Aquatic Plants
Below are a selection of recommended plants for your pond, providing a lengthy flowering period from March to October, but with the majority from May to September.
The number after each name indicates the amount of that plant required.
D = planting depth | S = plant spread | H = growth height | All are in cms

Nymphaea Alba D 80 | S 120 | H 10 Flowers May - Sept

Aponogeton Distachyos D 80 | S 40 | H 10 Flowers Mar - May + Sept

Myosotis Scorpioides D 15 | S 20 | H 10 Flowers May - July

Pontederia Corndata D 14-22 | S 20 | H 60 Flowers Aug - Sept

Veronica Beccabunga D 15 | S 20 | H 15 Flowers May - July

Oenanthe Jav. Flamingo D 15-30 | S 20 | H 20 Flowers July - Sept

Iris Versicolor D 15-40 | S 20 | H 75 Flowers May - June

Lythrum Salicaria D 13-22 | S 30 | H 100 Flowers June - Sept

Butomus Umbellatus D 14-44 | S 30 | H 60-90 Flowers June - July

Cyperus Longus D 14-44 | S 30 | H 90 | Flowers Aug - Oct

Myriophyllum Spicatum D 15-75 | S 20 | H 5 Flowers June - Sept
To help you think about planting, where the spread is, for example, noted as 20cm - then we need to put up to 5 plants per sq.m. Also, there should be a 2m space between each plant variety to allaw it to spread and not be invaded / over-taken by a more dominant neighbouring species.
Additional Notes
White Water Lily
Doesn't like constant splashing water. Benefit from the removal of dying flowers and foliage on a regular basis.
Water Hawthorn Lily
In summer months it goes dormant and disappears completely from view. This sweet scented lily comes back for repeat flowering in September.
Purple Iris
Divide every 3 years.
Pickerel
Divide in Spring after 2 to 3 years. Cut back leaf stem as soon as they begin to fall in Autumn.
Spiked Milfoil
This is one of three oxygenators required. Total 150 plants. Can be planted in the 2m gaps between other plant varieties as they are predominantly underwater plants.
